Abigail is about a 12-year-old ballerina who gets kidnapped in exchange for a $50 million ransom for keeping her hostage overnight. The kidnappers soon realize that Abigail is not who she seems and end up fighting for their lives throughout the night. Can this movie escape its clunky script?

If you thought vampire movies hit a low point with Twilight, prepare yourself because Abigail challenges its spot in terms of disappointment.

It addresses many vampire cliches and pokes fun at them then will include a jump scare in the next scene making the tone confusing and awkward. At no point did I know where the movie was going with its overly saturated plot. Gore fans will enjoy this movie because there is plenty of it. Although the gore makes more sense than the faults of the movie, its involvement with the laughable CGI effects is distracting.

I found myself thinking several times about when will the movie end with its multiple subplots that lead to bland resolutions. The dialogue and monologues from Abigail feel out of place and struggles to find clear direction even with the “big reveal” toward the end.

Abigail is one to skip unless you’re really into vampire and gory movies. Its failed attempts to be campy build up and fall short with its muddled subplots. It might have done better going directly to streaming to be able to laugh at its mess of cliches from the comfort of home.

ABIGAIL is in theaters April 19th, 2024.
