WICKED is Universal Pictures’ film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical based on a novel. The film’s part one takes place in the Land of Oz before Dorothy sweeps in. It tells the story of two witches named, Elphaba and Galinda, who share a complicated friendship formed at school. Can this highly anticipated film “Defy Gravity” for expectations from fans?
WICKED, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Galinda, have big wands to fill. They achieve that and more as they show us how masterful musicals can be with the right cast. Their dynamic talent takes the film to another level to capture joy, heartache, and wonder. This distinct cast is rounded out with Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, and Jonathan Bailey, who each deliver their roles so well it’s easy to feel like you are present in the “fantabulous” Land of Oz and all it has to offer. Fans of the musical will be happy to see cameos as well.
Speaking of Oz’s offerings, the visuals and wardrobe are some of the most dazzling I’ve seen on the big screen. The creativity of director Jon Chu and the film crew joined together to create a visual masterpiece that will be talked about for years to come. From Munchkinland to Shiz University to the Emerald City, each set is magnificently beautiful and is applaudable bringing it all together to blow audiences away.
WICKED is a two-part film that is slated to continue in November 2025, matching the musical’s two acts. If it’s anything like part one, then audiences are in for a unique experience that tells the story of the complex friendship of Elphaba and Galinda.
WICKED is in Theaters November 22nd, 2024.
