Happy Death Day 2U is in theaters on February 13th, 2019.

Happy Death Day 2U is the sequel where Tree Gelbman gets stuck in another loop in time but this time in a parallel universe. In order to save everyone she must die repeatedly over and over on her birthday while also trying to figure out who her new killer is. Can the sequel add more to the formula of the original plot or is it time for this series to end?

With horror/suspense films like this it can be difficult to come up with a plot that audiences will enjoy just as much, if not more, than the first one. I feel like they hit the nail on the head with reaching the bar of providing the same level of an entertaining story however it felt like something was missing.

Instead of staying in line with the more anxious filled horror scenes of its predecessor, this one focused more on its comedic elements. It was not necessarily a bad thing however it made it feel unbalanced. Since it teetered toward being a comedy slasher, the scenes where it was scary lost its appeal. The plot also felt unbalanced as it started off really interesting then hit a plateau and made me wonder how and when it was going to end. This film has sci-fi added to it as well making the plot bounce all over the place which is also hard to focus on.

The characters make up for the imbalance and help to bring back the interest during the slow moments. More emotion was pulled into this one and made it cheesy in some parts but it helped to get invested in their stories.

If you liked the first Happy Death Day then I recommend watching this one. While it does hit the tone of being a slasher film it leans more toward being a comedy which is peculiar but still keeps you entertained along the way. Make sure to stay during the credits for a bonus scene!
