Dark Phoenix is in theaters on June 7th, 2019.

Dark Phoenix is the origin movie about Jean Grey, arguably the most powerful X-Men. During a space rescue mission she is struck by a cosmic force that causes her to act even more powerful yet unstable when she returns to earth. Grey gradually changes from friend to foe and the X-Men are forced to take action. Can Dark Phoenix be the film to tie up the loose ends for the series?

With such a grand aspiration to be the ending to the X-Men we have come to know since 2011 this movie set its bar. Instead of giving us a proper goodbye it was mediocre at best. It felt like they started off so well then focused their attention on other movies instead and absentmindedly remembered that this series still exists. You can tell where things in the comic books overlap but with movie rights they don’t transfer as easily so instead of getting name brand, this was the off brand version that was a cringe to watch.

The fight scenes were one of the biggest saving graces of this movie. They were filled with the action that viewers want and it was good to see the cast fight once again. Other than that, Dark Phoenix played it safe to be a movie about such an internally conflicted character. Sophie Turner was cast well but I don’t think they allowed her much wiggle room to really explore Jean Grey and left us at a safe zoned surface level.

This movie is not memorable like some of the others in the past. If you are a fan of the X-Men series I suggest that you still watch it to see how it ends but enter the theater with low expectations.
