New York City architect Natalie works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper. And if things weren’t bad enough, Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady.

When I saw they were releasing Isn’t It Romantic on February 13 th , I thought “Wow, a rom com for
Valentine’s Day, how original!” And though I was saying it sarcastically, I was surprised to find I was
right! Isn’t It Romantic was original and hilarious. With a cast of Rebel Wilson, Adam Devine & Liam
Hemsworth (swoon), I don’t know why I ever doubted this movie. Isn’t It Romantic takes everything
that’s cheesy and stereotypical about rom coms and piles them all into one movie on love steroids.
Rebel Wilson plays Natalie, a young architect whose insecurity in her appearance has caused her to be
very shy and afraid to show her true self. She has great ideas at work but often finds herself getting
coffees or running errands instead of taking the lead in big presentations. She’s also so self-deprecating
that she doesn’t notice the interest her co-worker and friend Josh (played by adorable Adam Devine)
shows her. After constantly mocking romantic comedy movies and the fake image they portray, she gets
injured on the subway only to wake up and realize she is now stuck in a romantic comedy! Natalie
assumes the only way to get out of this “dream” is to make someone fall in love with her. Cue Liam
Hemsworth and a long line of atypical romantic comedy motions including breaking into an ice cream
shop, having a stereotypical gay best friend, a movie makeover, and even having to stop a wedding. It
isn’t until Natalie realizes that it isn’t about making someone else love you, but about loving yourself.
Isn’t It Romantic takes aim at the corniness of romantic comedies while still showing love and respect to
some of the classic like Pretty Woman and When Harry Met Sally, just to name a few. Rebel Wilson and
Adam Devine are adorable, and I loved seeing them back together post-Pitch Perfect. Their chemistry is
fun and felt real. It was also great to see Liam Hemsworth let loose in this role – and it certainly didn’t
hurt to see him shirtless.
