While the MCU has been hitting a multiverse slump, THE MARVELS is a perfect movie to watch to get you back in the original Marvel spirit. You won't need to think too much, there won't be that much happening that's outside this film, so if you're not caught up with everything, you won't have to worry.
Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as THE MARVELS.
There is some awesome character development that happens throughout the film with all three major leads. While some developments, ie Carol Danvers, are better than others, Captain Monica Rambeau, this may only be because Carol Danvers is a character we have been invested in longer. I do feel like they could have given a little more thought and depth to Rambeau's character, but maybe that's where we will be headed to in the future. Of course, Kamala Khan's character had some good moments, but that is maybe because her character has been flashed out in her own series.
Some multiverse hints are ok, and just sprinkled in helps and doesn't overtake the movie. You don't need to watch the others to get what's going on here, but if you do, it just adds to it. This is the MCU just like it used to be, and I'm ok with that for now.
All in all, this is a good movie. A movie you want to watch with the family for some exciting moments and great action battle scenes, a few in particular. grab some popcorn, a large soda, a cocktail, let your mind go for this very short run time MCU film.
As I'm sure you know, make sure you stay until the mid credit scene. There is a very end credit scene, but the bathroom might be a better call, so no need to wait around for it.
THE MARVELS opens in U.S. theaters on November 10th, 2023.
