Five Nights at Freddy’s is based on video game of the same name. The game is immensely popular with a huge fan base of all ages. If you are a fan of the game this movie is definitely for you, there are a lot of references and characters that you will be familiar with including the music.

I have never played the game so I went in knowing nothing about the movie except the premise. I enjoyed the movie, it was entertaining if not a little heavy at times. I was expecting more of a horror aspect and this felt like more of a thriller/mystery.

Josh Hutcherson plays the main character, Mike Schmidt who is raising his sister, Abby Schmidt(Piper Rubio). When Mike falls on hard times he takes a job as a security guard at a closed pizza restaurant where animatronic characters used to perform. Turns out, there’s more to this restaurant than meets the eye.

This has a PG-13 rating, I could see them wanting to keep this so that the younger audience that plays the game can watch this. It wasn’t overly scary, more like a movie to watch if you’re just starting to get into horror.

Overall it was pretty entertaining, the plot at times was a bit convoluted especially scenes with the police officer, Vanessa Monroe (Elizabeth Lail). They made her character confusing to understand and kind of all over the place. Other than that, I can enjoy a movie to enjoy it and not look too deeply into it. If you know someone who’s familiar with this franchise they will probably enjoy seeing these characters on the big screen.

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S is in Theaters and streaming on Peacock October 27th, 2023.
