We already know Michael B. Jordan can act and put on an amazing performance, whether that's as Creed or any other character he has portrayed in the past. The question with this movie is, can he direct? With this being his first time directing, can he pull it off, while also giving that same amazing performance? Or does it just all mesh way too much and it's too much for him?
After dominating the boxing world, Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) has been thriving in both his career and family life. When a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy, Damian (Jonathan Majors), resurfaces after serving a long sentence in prison, he is eager to prove that he deserves his shot in the ring. The face-off between former friends is more than just a fight. To settle the score, Adonis must put his future on the line to battle Damian – a fighter who has nothing to lose. Creed III is the third installment in the successful franchise and is Michael B. Jordan’s directorial debut.
Sometimes the acting in the movie can get a little dry. They also like to focus on a lot of family drama. While this is good to have in any movie, it just adds on to the run time, and drags out the fight we've all been waiting for. Sometimes, the family drama is too much, and feels too fake. It just feels off from the rest of the film.
This all being said, of course, the fight scenes are amazing and well choreographed. It just gets broken up way too much with family drama that, while helping some of the story, just slows everything down and loses the traction the story just created.
Jonathan Majors is the perfect villain for this movie. If anyone could take on Creed, it's him. He brings an amazing performance to the screen as Dame, and he can keep himself on par with someone who could actually take on Creed. You will want more screen time of Dame, since his character brings out so many emotions to Creed and when they are in the room together, you can just feel all tention and emotion. Both Jordan and Majors play off each other very well.
The end-fight scene turns into a more center-staged type of performance. It's just us the audience and them the boxers. It seems more involved and creates a life of its own while you are just in awe of these two amazing actors giving such an amazing performance.
If I were you, I'd try to watch this one on the biggest screen you can. Grab that popcorn and strap yourself in for the fight of the year.
'Creed III' is in theaters on March 3rd, 2023.
