Little Women is in theaters on December 25th, 2019.
Little Women hit theatres this Christmas. Not going to lie, I was super excited to see this film. I loved Ladybird, Greta Gerwig did such a great job with that movie. I am also such a huge fan of Saoirse Ronan. After leaving the theatre I wasn’t disappointed. This film was excellent! It was truly heartfelt, perfect timing for Christmas.
This movie follows the March sisters who are growing up outside of Concord, Massachusetts. There’s Jo (Saoirse Ronan) who is very free spirited while very stubborn. Meg (Emma Watson) who is the oldest and the most level headed of the sisters. Amy (Florence Pugh) who is a very talented painter but also bratty with a sense of humor. And then there’s Beth (Eliza Scanlen) who is very gentle, quiet and an amazing piano player. The movie does go back and forth during the past and present, which does sometimes get confusing, but for the most part, it helps the story flow. You definitely didn’t have to read the novel beforehand or even remember the plot if you did read it.
Watching this movie made me wish I had a large number of sisters as a support system. Watching their interactions and seeing how much they are full of spirit and charm. The film was wonderfully produced. The sets and costumes were stunning and felt real to the time period. Ronan was so spectacular. She captured Jo’s ambition and independence so well. Watson also did very well, the best I’ve seen from her in a while. Pugh was another excellent standout. She showed Amy’s many layers well and clearly understands her character. She was brilliant. I enjoyed her scenes. Timothee Chalamet was very charming but impulsive while Laura Dern played such a sweet and saintly mother.
This movie is truly great! It celebrates family and the incredible bond of sisterhood. Gerwig has really done it again with another great film. She took this classic story and made it feel fresh and new. I will definitely be checking out the film again!
