Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is in theaters on October 18th, 2019.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the sequel to Maleficent that was released in 2014. With the upcoming marriage between Aurora (Queen of the Moors) and Prince Phillip (kingdom of Ulstead), the tension between the humans and the fairies is at an all time high. Maleficent does not agree with the union and her and Aurora begin to question the family they have created. Can this sequel live up to the first?
This film starts off with the storybook feeling and does not let up from there. This helps to add to the element of suspense since the story of Maleficent is loosely based from the story of Sleeping Beauty. The visuals are beautifully presented and it is easy to become immersed in the story. It does start to drag out however as the plot begins to split into multiple sub-plots that are equally drawn out to the point that action is desired, no matter how small. It does pick up eventually but by that time it may be too late depending on how much you enjoy watching action.
With such a stellar cast including Angelina Jolie, Michelle Pfeiffer and Imelda Staunton, the film did not use the cast's full potential. The acting felt watered down by the multi-story plot even though the cast all delivered a good performance. It also did not have the dark tone from the first film even though the scenery was mostly dark. It did not match and made it hard to see any hints at the “mistress of evil” which was a let down.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is entertaining but not memorable. With a saturated plot, the acting gets drowned out which can leave you wanting more. It is however worth watching if you enjoyed the first movie.
Rating: 3 out of 5
