Yesterday is in theaters on June 28th, 2019.
Yesterday is a romantic comedy based on an alternate reality, where failed musician
Jack Malik, played by Himesh Patel, is the only person in the world to remember The Beatles.
This concept is one of the best ideas I’ve heard in recent years, and it’s surprising that its
brilliance hasn’t been created before.
Himesh Patel is an absolute star. He is incredibly talented, both musically and acting
chops, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him. He is hilarious in this film, while
also showing nuance in his performance for feeling guilty of the world he’s been dealt, but the
necessity to continue to take advantage the situation at the same time.
His manager Ellie, played by Lily James, is his best friend and possible love interest. A
school teacher by day, and a failing musician’s manager/driver by night. She’s an incredibly
hard-working woman that feels incredibly authentic due to James’ performance. Lily James
continues to surprise me in every role she has, and I look forward to her becoming an Oscar
winning actress someday, because it’s bound to happen.
Yesterday has the jokes, but most of all it has heart. I can’t imagine someone leaving the
theater and saying they didn’t enjoy this film. Not only is it solid, but you also get new
renditions of many Beatles classics along the way. Not to mention a supporting role from Ed
Sheeran, who shows up from time to time and does well with what he is given.
This is a film that deserves to be celebrated and seen by audiences in the theater. It’s
original stories like this that give me hope for the future of cinema. Not all fantastic ideas have
been created yet, and Yesterday is proof of that. Check it out when it hits a theater near you!
