The Nun is in theaters on September 7th, 2018.

I was SO excited when I learned the terrifying Nun character that appeared in The Conjuring 2 would be getting her own movie. I am a big fan of horror movies and an even bigger fan of The Conjuring Universe movies. They seem find the perfect mix of anxiety, jump scares and rich plot that make them great movies, not just great horror movies. The Nun was certainly no different.

Set in the early 50’s, Father Burke (Damián Bichir) is dispatched by The Vatican along with the soon-to-be-nun, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga), to investigate the peculiar goings on at an abbey in Romania. From there, the pair discover that the once holy grounds of the abbey are now infested with a terrifying and powerful entity.

The movie laid out a great foundation for already established universe within The Conjuring series of films while delivering a story that felt original and entirely its own. I did at times though feel like the entire package of the film wasn’t as in line with the other entries in the universe, but it didn’t necessarily detract from my enjoyment either.

All in all, The Nun had plenty of jump scares, a whole lot of suspense building, and it even was able to sprinkle in some really funny moments that seemed to poke fun at and call back to some of the campier horror movies back in the day.

I was also very impressed how they seamlessly wove the story at the end to fit nicely within the later entries in the universe, as a huge fan of the franchise that was a really nice treat.

Rating: 4.8 out of 5
