We return to Brooklyn and the Spiderverse in the sequel to the 2018 hit animated film. Shameik Moore returns voicing Miles Morales, the Spider-Man from Earth 42 who is still figuring out exactly what kind of Spider-Man he wants to be. Hailee Steinfeld returns voicing Gwen Stacy, our favorite quirky Spider-Woman. We have some new faces including Daniel Kaluuya who plays a new character, Hobie aka Spider-Punk (the coolest!). Also joining the cast is Oscar Isaac voicing Miguel O’Hara, a mysterious vampire ninja Spider-Man.
The movie picks up as a continuation from the first film. I would definitely suggest watching the first one again if it’s been a while since you’ve seen it. I did not do a re-watch and some parts I had forgotten about, the first film is not forgotten here, it would beneficial to watch it again.
They really take the animation to another level in this movie, especially with Spider-Punk, his animation is unreal and it just presents itself so fitting for his character. I fell in love with Gwen all over again as she gets a lot of character development in this movie.
The score and soundtrack was awesome, definitely something I enjoyed from the first movie and they stayed on that trajectory.
Another thing I loved was the inclusiveness and diversity of the film, there is a pregnant female super hero, Jessica Drew, voiced by Issa Rae and there was also a Spider-Woman in a wheelchair. You see all kinds of races and types of people, just like you would in everyday life. There are several different spider kinds, it will be hard to pick your favorite! Mine was Spider-Cat, can the cat get their own movie?!
If you liked the first one (which I loved!) you definitely will enjoy this film. It is a bit long, and the plot is heavy with emotions, but overall I think kids will enjoy it.
SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE is in Theaters on June 2nd, 2023.
