Steve Carrell returns as the despicable villain, Gru. This is a prequel so it’s focus is on Gru’s first big adventure as a villain. We see how he came to inherit the minions and his rise to becoming the ultimate baddie!

This movie takes place in the 1970’s and is filled with nostalgia. We meet a new super villain, Belle Bottom, voiced by Taraji P. Henson, she’s part of a whole crew of villains that Gru is attempting to join. Unlike most kids, Gru’s heroes are a super villain team called the Vicious 6.

I took my nieces to watch this and they both absolutely loved it. It’s definitely geared towards kids, there is minimal adult humor and I still thought it was entertaining. They definitely go big towards the end and the movie is pretty fantastical, but it’s an animated film for children, and it was good for the demographic.

The minions are hilarious, adorable and lovable as always. The movie leaves the ending open for more films about Gru’s rise to being the most despicable villain. I look forward to the next installment (if there is one) from illumination.

'Minions: The Rise of Gru' is in Theaters July 1st, 2022.
